LCol Mark Hickey passed the Wing Operations Officer (W Ops O) appointment to LCol Joshua Kutryk on June 27.

At the ceremony, LCol Hickey said the success of Wing Operations under his command has been “due to others.” He thanked his family, 4 Wing Commander Col Paul Doyle, Commanding Officers and Branch Heads of 4 Wing units, Wing Operations CWO Debbie Martens, and his administrative assistant Francoise Mielken for their support.
He also spoke highly of Wing Operations personnel. “Please know that I value all of your loyalty and support, and I thank you for the service you give Wing Operations, 4 Wing, the RCAF and our nation.”

Col Doyle thanked LCol Hickey for his service as W Ops O. “You always led from the front,” he said.

“Despite the sometimes incomprehensible amount of issues you oversaw, the tempo your organization has maintained over the past year has been impressive, and that’s a symbol of your leadership.”

LCol Kutryk thanked LCol Hickey for his dedication and for the success of Wing Operations under his command. He also thanked Col Doyle, whom he described as a “role model and a mentor.”

LCol Kutryk’s tenure as W Ops O turned out to be short-lived. On July 1, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he had been selected as one of two new Canadian astronauts. LCol Kutryk reports to NASA next month.

Maj Christopher Horch, Deputy W Ops O, will assume the W Ops O duties until a replacement is identified.
