On 8 March 2019, 4 Wing, Cold Lake will celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). This day is commemorated each year in Canada. Established in 1977 by the United Nations, it recognizes women’s great achievements in our society. IWD will take place at 4 Wing Cold Lake on Friday, March 8 from 0730 until 1600 hours for the purpose of acknowledging women in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and providing outreach to girls in the community.

IWD is organized by the Defence Women’s Advisory Organization (DWAO) at 4 Wing. The focus of the event is to raise awareness about Women’s contributions to the Royal Canadian Air Force and provide an opportunity for young women to see a future for themselves in traditionally male dominated fields by job shadowing from the women and men of 4 Wing. The DWAO will be canvassing female high school students for participants in this exciting day. The morning will be spent job shadowing one of the many skilled job positions occupied at 4 Wing Cold Lake. Participants will have the opportunity to be matched with a mentor that represents a trade of interest. Not only will students be exposed to military trades, civilian positions on 4 Wing will also be offered. There will be opportunities for unit tours as well as helicopter rides provided by 417 Combat Support (CS) Squadron. High school girls that are interested in participating can contact Major Hannam at alexia.hannam@forces.gc.ca .

This celebration is open to all 4 Wing members both military and civilian to volunteer as mentors. Women looking to be a mentor are to contact Major Cadieux at alana.cadieux@forces.gc.ca . A brief job description will be required in order to appropriately match with a mentee. This will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the variety of trades.
