Family Day

COURIER

Family Day is a relatively “new” holiday, currently only recognized in four provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and British Columbia. For a time Alberta celebrated the joy of family all on its own, with the first ever “Family Day” being held in 1990! It took 17 years for the next province, Saskatchewan, to join Alberta, instituting Family Day as a provincial holiday in 2007.

A holiday that has lived to see a quarter century (plus some years), was brought about by former Premier Don Getty. Don’s idea was one that if we “push back against the family disintegration, we would have families happier and healthier and we would actually start to slow down the process of family break-up”, as quoted in the February 19, 2012 edition of the Edmonton Sun. Don Getty felt it was important to give a day back to the families, to take the pressures off of them and let them have fun together.

While the first few holidays saw mild temperatures making it easier to hit the hills, the rinks or roast hotdogs and marshmallows, those traditions are often still seen amongst families and communities each year, despite the temperatures outside.

We here at 4 Wing Personnel Support Programs (PSP) are excited to celebrate the wonderful families of our communities at the 2019 Family Day Snow Fever Eevents! Partnerships with 4 Wing Cold Lake has partnered with, the City of Cold Lake, and the Municipal District .D. of Bonnyville to bring you a weekend full of family fun adventure!
