To players and peers, he’s called “Coach Chris” and to that fond title he can add “Coach of the Year.”

4 Wing’s Sgt. Chris Thomas has been named volunteer coach of the year by Cold Lake & District Community Volunteer Awards.

Thomas, with 4 Wing Operations Support Squadron, came to Cold Lake in 2007 and since then has been a coach with the Senior Royals Football program at Cold Lake High School.

“He has shown them the importance of community volunteerism, getting involved in the community, and serving others,” said Royals head coach Kelly Johnson.

Thomas has served as Defensive Coordinator Coach with the senior Royals as well as helping out with bantam and junior teams. He is also treasurer for the minor football association.

“Over the years he has served as a mentor and role model to many youth throughout the Cold Lake Community, as well he has encouraged and helped other coaches develop their leadership skills and capacity,” says Johnson.
