Stay Fire Safe This Summer

Warmer weather brings more time outdoors—but it also increases the risk of fire. Whether at home, on base, at work or in the community, simple precautions can prevent serious incidents.

Outdoor Safety

  • Keep barbecues at least one metre (3 ft) away from buildings, decks, and vegetation.
  • Never leave a barbecue or outdoor fire unattended
  • Fully extinguish campfires with water—not just sand—before leaving
  • Dispose of smoking materials safely in proper containers.

Wildland fire Awareness

  • Avoid burning during dry, hot, or windy conditions.
  • Respect all local burn bans and restrictions.
  • Keep grass, brush, and flammable materials clear around buildings.
  • Ensure vehicles and equipment do not spark in dry areas.

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety (E-Bikes, Tools, Phones, etc.)

Improper use or charging of lithium-ion batteries can lead to fast-spreading fires or explosions.

  • Only use manufacturer-approved chargers and batteries
  • Charge devices on a hard, non-flammable surface (not on beds, sofas, or carpets)
  • Never charge batteries unattended or overnight
  • Keep batteries away from heat, direct sunlight, or moisture.
  • Do not use or charge batteries that are damaged, swollen, or overheating.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place, away from flammable materials.
  • Avoid charging e-bikes or scooters inside living spaces or near exits.

If a battery starts to smoke, overheat, or catch fire:

  • Move away immediately and call emergency services.

Do not attempt to extinguish a lithium-ion battery fire yourself

Home & Living Areas

  • Test smoke alarms monthly and change batteries as needed.
  • Keep balconies, patios, and exits clear of clutter.
  • Use extension cords safely—avoid overloading outlets.
  • Store fuel, propane, and flammable liquids properly.

Electrical & Equipment Use

  • Do not overload power bars or outlets.
  • Inspect cords and appliances for damage before use.
  • Turn off and unplug unattended electrical devices.

Protect Your Team & Family

  • Know your escape plan and practice it.
  • Ensure everyone understands how to respond in an emergency.
  • Report fire hazards immediately.

Remember: Most fires are preventable. Staying alert and taking simple precautions can protect lives, property, and operations.
