As Canadian Armed Forces Base Cold Lake welcomes 2025, it marks a significant milestone for one of its most cherished institutions—the Courier News. Celebrating its 70th anniversary, this publication has been a reliable source of news and stories for both the military community and Cold Lake residents since its inception in 1955.

Founded just a year after the base itself opened in 1954, the Courier News has serves as the official news outlet for the base, bringing essential information and updates to the men and women who made Cold Lake their home. After a brief publishing hiatus, the paper made a triumphant return in 1967 and has continued to serve as an integral part of base life ever since. In 2021, the Courier News took a significant step into the digital age, becoming fully digital to better meet the needs of its readers.

This year’s 70th-anniversary celebrations promise to offer an exciting and comprehensive look back at the rich history of the Courier. The yearlong celebration will include the special feature, The Courier News Through the Decades. This retrospective will take readers on a journey through the decades, reflecting on the historical moments that shaped the publication—and the community—along the way. From Cold War tensions to modern-day innovations, the paper has chronicled the triumphs, challenges, and everyday life at CFB Cold Lake.

In collaboration with the Cold Lake Museums, the Courier News will highlight their historical collection, drawing connections between past articles and the artifacts that tell the story of Cold Lake and the military base’s development. Readers will experience how the news of the past intertwines with the history preserved at the museums, creating a deeper understanding of the times, people, and events that shaped the community.

This year, the Courier News will use its social media platforms, video content, and the extensive archives housed at the Courier News office to bring the past to life. Through engaging digital content, the paper will showcase historic articles, photographs, and interviews with those who have contributed to the legacy of the Courier News.
