Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake marked the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) on December 3rd with an event at the 4 Wing Theatre. Supported by the Defence Advisory Group for Persons with Disabilities (DAGPWD), the event aimed to raise awareness, promote inclusivity, and celebrate the achievements of persons with disabilities.

The program featured a panel discussion with members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), representatives from Veterans Affairs Canada and Employabilities, and guest speaker Curtis Hargrove. Employabilities delivered a presentation on their efforts to connect individuals with disabilities to meaningful employment, highlighting the organization’s ongoing impact in fostering workplace inclusivity.

Curtis Hargrove, known for his cross-country marathon fundraising efforts, inspired attendees with his message about the importance of collective action in creating opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Second Lieutenant Zain Haq, one of the event organizers, highlighted the objectives of the day: “For this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, I hoped to achieve a few key goals. First, to raise awareness about the challenges faced by people with disabilities and encourage more understanding in the community. Another goal was to celebrate the achievements of individuals with disabilities, showing that they are making significant contributions across various fields.”

Participants also engaged in discussions on the challenges faced by individuals with visible and invisible disabilities, including mental health conditions, within the CAF and society. Resources and support programs from Veterans Affairs Canada and Employabilities were shared as practical tools to assist those in need.

“This event helps improve understanding and support for persons with disabilities within the CAF community,” said Second Lieutenant Haq. “By fostering open dialogue and education, we break down stereotypes and reinforce the message that everyone, regardless of ability, can contribute meaningfully to the CAF.”

Through events like IDPD, CFB Cold Lake continues its efforts to promote awareness and inclusivity, ensuring that all CAF and local community members have the resources and support they need to succeed.
