Dear members of 4 Wing & CFB Cold Lake,
As we conclude 2024, a year that marked the Centennial of the Royal Canadian Air Force, we should all take pride in reflecting on the challenges we faced and successes that we achieved together. This holiday season offers us a moment to pause and celebrate our collective accomplishments while looking forward to the year ahead. Overall, December is a time filled with festive traditions and camaraderie – from unit parties and hockey games, office decorating competitions, appreciation dinners, the “At Home,” and Sticky Floor. All of these traditions are a part of who we are, and they show that the holiday spirit shines brightly here and across the whole Base.
From our point of view, this year has been defined by your resilience and dedication. Despite the hurdles posed by harsh weather, limited resources, and ongoing construction, 4 Wing & CFB Cold Lake has consistently upheld the highest standards of excellence. Our Tactical Fighter Squadrons have maintained their combat effectiveness, and our training units have consistently produced a high number of qualified technicians and pilots. We have successfully conducted multiple rescue missions, exceled in our NORAD mandate, taken on a new radar capability, executed a record breaking air show, enhanced vehicle and support equipment serviceability, and provided exceptional administrative, maintenance and logistical support – all the while also focusing on the new path ahead that will be needed to transition to the CF-35. Equally important, we have continued to enhance support programs and services for our members and their families through the tireless efforts of our chaplaincy, PSP, and the MFRCS team.
On the whole, your unwavering commitment to our mission and community is exceptional, and it represents the strength of our Defence Team and partners. We don’t do it often enough, but take the time to step back and consider the total accomplishments of the Wing and Base over the past 12 months; when you do, you will realize that 2024 was indeed a remarkable year, and that you all have much to be proud of!
We would also like to recognize those who are on duty during the holidays, including our members who are deployed on missions worldwide. Your service and sacrifice do not go unnoticed. You are in our thoughts, and we deeply appreciate the steadfast support that you and your families provide for our nation.
In the end, as you are able to, please take some time over the holiday break for a well-deserved rest, and make sure that you take care of yourself. You are the pride of our community, our nation, and we are honoured to serve alongside you. Travel safe and we look forward to seeing you all again after the break.
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
