In 2024, Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake celebrated two major milestones: the 70th anniversary of the base and the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The year was marked by exceptional events, including a memorable Cold Lake Air Show and
numerous community initiatives that strengthened the bond between the base and the surrounding area. These milestones not only celebrated our rich history but also highlighted the enduring dedication and pride of those who serve and support at CFB Cold Lake.


Here’s a look at some of our most exciting headlines of the year!
 
January 
 
A pair of former residents at CFB Cold Lake shared their memories in a new feature, including one who remembered the very early days around RCAF Station Cold Lake 
 
February 
 
Snow Fever took hold of CFB Cold Lake once again, while 42 Radar Squadron took their talents to Arizona on exercise. 
 
March 
 
The RCAF announced several landmarks across the country would be going blue to help celebrate their centennial year 
 
April 
 
 
April 1st  marked the official birthday of the RCAF! The Cold Lake Museums help celebrate with a centennial open house, while some CFB Cold Lake-based lifesavers made a splash at the Provincial Pool Lifesaving Sport Challenge. 
 

May 
 
CFB Cold Lake celebrated the RCAF Centennial with a number of events in May, including a Freedom of the City parade, an Open House, and hosting the RCAF Run right on the runway! 
 

June  
 
As the summer weather arrived, CFB Cold Lake played host to another exciting Summer Sports Day, while a familiar face leading the 4 Wing Band said goodbye 
 

 July  
 
July welcomed a new leader at 4 Wing and the 2024 Cold Lake Air Show. While wildfire smoke made for tough flying conditions, the air show was a roaring success with fans and volunteers alike 


August 
 
In August, a CFB Cold Lake member used his muscle to make headlines at a Provincial Strongman competition, while 401 Tactical Fighter Squadron received a visit from some motorcyclists on a mission 

 
September
 
Prost! CFB Cold Lake played host to another successful Oktoberfest event, highlighting its German heritage, while members also took part in a Battle of Britain remembrance ceremony. 
 

 October 
 
October wasn’t scary at all, as CFB Cold Lake Firefighters headed out into the community for Fire Prevention Week and the base hosted a visit from Canada’s Governor General, Mary Simon  
 

November 
 
Cold Lake came together on November 11th to remember at a packed ceremony hosted in the city 
 
December  
 
In an unprecedented verdict, the judges of the 2024 Courier News Office Christmas Decorating Challenge declared a tie! The Cold Lake Air Show received an honour from the International Council of Air Shows
